10 Family Ideas for Rainy Days on the Tablelands

Because a little rain doesn’t have to stop the fun.

Let’s face it — the Tablelands gets its fair share of wet weather. But just because the rain’s pouring, doesn’t mean you need to stay cooped up at home. Whether you’re wrangling restless kids or looking for something a bit different to fill a grey afternoon, here are ten great ideas for rainy day adventures across the Atherton Tablelands.

1. Maude Kehoe Park, Yungaburra
If your little ones need to burn off energy, Maude Kehoe Park is a fantastic option. Located right in the heart of Yungaburra, this spacious playground features a full roof, keeping kids dry while they run, climb and play. Pack some snacks, a thermos of tea and let them go wild — without the mud.

2. NQ Tenpin Bowling, Atherton
Classic, affordable, and fun for all ages. Tenpin bowling is a great way to stay active indoors and share a laugh or two. Bumpers and lightweight balls make it accessible even for younger kids, and it’s a great option for birthday parties or group outings when the weather won’t cooperate.

3. Malanda Falls Visitor Centre
Rainy days are perfect for slow explorations, and the Malanda Falls Visitor Centre delivers just that. With interactive displays about local wildlife, geology (including ancient volcanoes), and rainforest ecosystems, it’s educational and fun. Younger kids will love the butterfly displays, and the building itself is dry, calm and surrounded by lush scenery.

4. Gallo Dairyland
A crowd favourite. Head to Gallo Dairyland to meet the farm animals, then pop into the café for house-made cheeses, chocolates, and hot food. Kids can get up close with calves, goats and chickens, while parents enjoy a proper coffee. Rain just makes it feel more rustic.

5. Mareeba Heritage Museum
This local gem is packed with fascinating exhibits that kids can touch, climb, and explore. Learn about Mareeba’s early settler life, check out the vintage machinery and artefacts, and don’t miss the adjoining Heritage Coffee House. A great rainy-day outing that’s both affordable and memorable.

6. Lake Barrine Cruise & Teahouse
Yes — you can enjoy the lake even in the rain. In fact, there’s something magical about mist over the water. Take a scenic boat tour around Lake Barrine (with a roof to keep you dry), then warm up at the historic Tea House. There’s even a small kid-friendly nook where children can colour in or read while you enjoy scones and tea.

7. Spy & Camera Museum, Herberton
Don’t be fooled by the name — this isn’t just for adults. The Spy & Camera Museum is a treasure trove of fascinating tech and history, and the guided tour brings it to life for kids of all ages. With real spy gadgets, old-school film cameras, and curious tools from the past, it’s both quirky and captivating.

8. Majestic Cinema, Malanda
Sometimes the simplest option is the best — and few things beat watching a movie while the rain taps on the roof. The historic Majestic Theatre in Malanda screens new releases and family favourites in a beautifully restored heritage building. Check the schedule online or in the magazine before heading out.

9. Mad Hatterz Café, Atherton
Turn a wet afternoon into an unforgettable tea party. This whimsical café is decorated with Alice in Wonderland flair and offers dress-up boxes, quirky décor, and fun menus for little guests. It’s a dream for young imaginations — and there’s great coffee for the adults too.

10. Brave the Rain – Waterfalls & Rainforest Walks
Sometimes, you just need to lean into the weather. Grab your rain jackets and head out to explore the waterfalls while they’re at their peak. Places like Millaa Millaa Falls, Zillie Falls or the rainforest trails around Lake Eacham and Lake Barrine come alive in the wet season — and you’re likely to have them all to yourself.

Final Tip:
Don’t let the rain cancel your plans — just adapt them. The Atherton Tablelands is full of experiences that are even better with a little drizzle, and your kids might remember the soggy, muddy, giggle-filled adventures more than anything else.
