Bucks Harbor – community screening event

A DOCUMENTARY about fishermen, fathers and sons, and what gets passed down will screen at the Majestic Theatre Malanda on Saturday, September 5 – presented in collaboration with the Yungaburra Men’s Shed.
Bucks Harbor takes audiences into a rugged fishing community on Maine’s Atlantic coast, where life is governed by the seasons, the tides and the lobster catch, and survival is a trade passed down from father to son. Directed by American photographer Pete Muller, the film follows fishermen young and old as they navigate a working life where a man’s worth is measured by the strength of his back.
Variety called it a “wistful and humane portrait of hardy souls young and old.”
The film, winner of this year’s Berlinale Jury Prize and the Margaret Mead Film Festival Audience Award, has just had its Australian premiere at the Castlemaine Documentary Festival (CDoc). This one-off Tablelands screening is presented by CDoc in partnership with the Yungaburra Men’s Shed, with 50 per cent of profits going back into their ongoing projects.
Organisers say the film’s themes of generational connection, quiet labour and what men pass on to one another made the Men’s Shed an obvious partner for bringing it to the region, offering a rare chance to see it before it moves further along the festival circuit and into cinemas.
