From the jungles of India, where he filmed wild rh From the jungles of India, where he filmed wild rhinos from the back of an elephant, to documenting wildlife and landscapes across Australia, Stanley Breeden’s life has been shaped by an extraordinary curiosity for the natural world.

Over more than six decades, his work has included 25 natural history books, documentaries, two Emmy Awards, and work published in National Geographic.

Stanley first photographed the Atherton Tablelands in 1962 and was so struck by its waterfalls, plants and wildlife that he vowed to return and live here one day. Thirty-five years later, he did.

Today, Stanley lives on his nature refuge, Bulurru, and is still creating, with a new book about his lifelong adventures in the Australian bush underway.

📖 Read more about Stanley’s remarkable life in our August issue.

Ever wondered what Mt Quincan looks like from abov Ever wondered what Mt Quincan looks like from above? 🌋

Rising from the farmland near Yungaburra, Mt Quincan is one of the youngest volcanic features on the Atherton Tablelands – and from the air, its crater and steep-sided volcanic form are impossible to miss.

In our August issue, Kevin Explores takes us above Mt Quincan to explore how it formed, what makes it different from the Tablelands’ older volcanoes, and the remarkable Aboriginal oral histories that may preserve accounts of volcanic eruptions witnessed thousands of years ago.

It’s also a fascinating look at the landscape we see every day – from the volcanic soils beneath our farms to the craters, lakes, and hills that reveal the Tablelands’ fiery past.

🌋 Read the full story in our August issue, and follow Kevin Explores on Facebook or subscribe to his Substack for more aerial adventures and stories from across the Tablelands.

Last night, Hou Wang Temple opened after dark for Last night, Hou Wang Temple opened after dark for Twilight at the Temple 🏮✨

This was a rare chance to experience the temple after dark, beautifully illuminated for the evening. The night included a guided tour of the historic temple and museum, along with Chinese tea, mooncakes, and a fortune cookie 🥠

Built in 1903, the Hou Wang Temple is the last timber and iron Chinese temple in Australia and an incredible piece of the Atherton Tablelands’ Chinese heritage. Most of the temple fittings, including its elaborate carvings, bell and metal vessels, were made in China and brought to Australia.

Such a beautiful way to experience one of Atherton’s most fascinating historic places 🏮✨

Windin Falls – easily one of the most spectacular Windin Falls – easily one of the most spectacular places on the Atherton Tablelands.

The 11.5 km return track begins in World Heritage-listed rainforest, passes through open eucalypt forest, then finishes with a steep descent to sweeping views across Wooroonooran National Park and the valley below.

📍 Windin Falls Walking Track, Wooroonooran National Park
🥾 Grade 4, 11.5 km return
⏱️ Allow 2.5–3 hours walking time, plus time at the falls
⚠️ The final 100 metres are steep, with a short rock scramble beside a sheer drop. Rocks can be slippery, particularly during and after rain, and the official advice is to stay out of the water and away from the cliff edge.

🐶 No dogs allowed

A beautiful walk, but one to approach with care. As the sign at the trailhead says: “Do not risk your life for a photo. Live to post your story.”
